Homework Policy Document
Bournes Green Junior School recognises the important
role that homework can play in the education of children. It develops a more
effective partnership between school and parents, so pupils can practise and
develop skills they have learnt in the classroom. It gives parents greater
understanding of their child's work and greater participation in their
learning.

Pupils are expected to work extremely hard during the
school day and it is not appropriate to overload their free time, which is, in
itself, valuable. Time in which to develop and play as "children" is often not
given the full weight it deserves and it is therefore not the policy of the
school to set onerous amounts of work.
We see all extra-curricular
activities as being 'homework', important to the holistic development of
children, (including sports clubs, Cubs, Brownies, Church groups etc.)
The Homework Policy sets a sensible amount of work to
be completed at home, to reflect and support those principles. As children
progress through the school, from Year 3 to Year 6, the frequency and amount of
homework will naturally increase. It should, however, also be noted that these
are general guidelines, and there may be variations at different times of the
year, as teachers match the homework to the needs of their class, and of
individuals.
Children will be expected to:
Read daily (to a parent or individually) and a record of
this reading to be made by the parent in the child's Reading Record Book.
Learn their mathematical tables and number-bonds for
assessment during regular tests in class.
Learn spellings for regular tests.
Practice a musical instrument if applicable.
Complete work set from time to time by the class teacher,
to support a specific area of the curriculum.
The daily recommended reading, which the Government
recommends for all primary children, can be done as part of the homework.
| Years 3 and 4 |
1.5 hours per week |
| Years 5 and 6 |
30 minutes per day |
If the child is unable to complete the homework on time,
or you feel your child is having difficulty with specific work, please write a
note to their teacher explaining this. |
